UB Trade x SmithErickson Designs
Stephanie Smith and Jenelle Erickson are the principal designers and co-owners of SmithErickson Designs. As members of UB Trade and frequent Urban Barn shoppers, we were thrilled to speak with Stephanie and Jenelle about what inspires them and how they're creating timeless spaces for their clients in 2024.
How did you two get started as designers?
Jenelle: I have always had a deep passion for crafting interiors. Classic and timeless spaces have always resonated with me. I was inspired by my mom who has always had an eye for beautiful spaces and creating a warm and elegant home. Her natural talent inspired me to become an interior designer.
Stephanie: I was always interested in the arts; music, fashion, art and architecture, and after encouragement from my now-husband to pursue design as a career, I attended school, interned and then obtained a position at a homebuilder where I expanded my knowledge over the years.
How did your partnership at SmithErickson Designs come to be? How do you balance and complement each other?
Jenelle: We met working together in the production homebuilding industry and clicked immediately.
Stephanie: We approach design from the same perspective, aiming to achieve timeless spaces with each of us bringing different ideas to create thoughtful and layered designs.
How would you describe your signature style at SmithErickson Designs?
Every project is different because each client has different tastes and requirements, however we are known for creating classic homes that are timeless and inviting! We have had many people say that our designs feel lived in, which is the greatest compliment.
What are some key lifestyle factors you take into consideration when planning a space for a client?
Jenelle: Kids, entertaining, longevity, function, personality and durability.
Stephanie: We always love to meet our clients in their existing space to talk about their style and how it functions - it is great to see how people live and how a space is used.
What makes you gravitate towards Urban Barn products when you’re styling a room?
Urban Barn seamlessly integrates the classic, warm, and inviting style that aligns with our design firm’s aesthetic. Transitional pieces that can fit with any design style are our go-to!
What are your favourite kinds of products to shop for at Urban Barn?
Jenelle: Accents and counter stools. They’re quality pieces that cater to a broad audience.
Stephanie: Urban Barn is always a great stop for those finishing touches; greenery, frames etc.
How do you create that “Right at Home” feeling in the spaces you design?
Homes are a reflection of who lives in them, so we choose pieces that portray our clients’ personalities and have the feeling of being collected over time so it feels authentic.
What design lessons have you learned during your career?
To style with multiple shapes and textures - and not to over clutter.
Are there any design quotes you live by?
It sounds cliche but “Design is in the details” is so true. All those details that may not be immediately apparent when looking at a finished space are working together to create a pleasing composition.
What tips would you offer for someone just getting started with decorating their home?
Jenelle: Start with the main pieces such as the sofa and coffee table. Those pieces should be timeless and are the items you want to invest in.
Stephanie: Focus on one space at a time - finishing a space completely is so much more pleasing than having many areas throughout your home in flux.
What’s inspiring you and your team lately?
Warmer color schemes, raw woods and natural materials. We’re also inspired by historic homes and buildings, we love to bring a nod to the past into our designs so that they have character.
