How did you get started as a home stager?
I’ve always had a love for staging since I was young, so I knew design was in my future. I studied interior design at Lethbridge College in 2009, and from there I started my design career as a kitchen and bath designer. It was a great industry to learn, grow and gain experience. After we started a family, I decided to start my own business - Jade Design YXE. I started to stage show homes for different home builders and that is where my staging career took off!
How would you describe your home staging style? What types of spaces do you enjoy staging the most?
My staging style can differ from project to project, but I love mid-century modern and Scandinavian styles. I love to stage with a neutral colour palette consisting of warm wood tones, leather accents, white, black and hints of green. I enjoy staging for a Saskatoon builder Pure Developments. They build a beautiful home so staging them just feels like the icing on the cake! Their homes and my staging style go hand and hand so it really makes for a perfect project.
What do you think is a common misconception about home staging?
Some people believe that home staging is a costly endeavour reserved for high-end properties. While professional home staging services can be expensive, there are also budget-friendly staging options that can make a significant difference in how a home is perceived.
What steps do you take when starting a new home staging project?
I start with creating vision boards so I can see different pieces together and really get a feel for the vibe I am going for. I like to start with sourcing all of my larger pieces first, like sofa, coffee table, rug, accent chairs, etc. and work my way down to the smaller décor pieces.
What makes you gravitate towards Urban Barn products when you’re styling a room?
Urban Barn is definitely one of my go-to spots when I am staging a project. All of the pieces work so well together, which I love. The variety of products makes it a one-stop shop. I also have an amazing sales rep April at the Saskatoon location who is beyond helpful and makes the shopping experience fun and enjoyable!
What are your favourite kinds of products to shop for at Urban Barn?
Everything! Urban Barn has really amazing furniture pieces that work well in so many spaces. I love the area rugs, plants, bedding, artwork and other small décor. One of my favourite pieces is the Tacona Armchair in ivory or black!
Which design elements do you feel are non-negotiables when it comes to creating that “Right at Home” feeling in a living space?
Plants and greenery are a must! They add colour and bring the space to life. I stage with a touch of greenery in every room. Area rugs also make a huge impact on a living space to create that cozy feel, ground the space and add colour and texture to the room.
Is there a design quote you live by?
“Less is more” - Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Design does not need to be cluttered or overly complex, often times a clean and uncluttered design approach can be more impactful.
What inspires you lately?
Instagram has so many amazing design accounts, it is a great source for inspiration. It really is an invaluable platform for designers and design enthusiasts seeking inspiration and staying connected to the ever-evolving world of design.
Is there a signature style or design detail you’ve become known for?
I think I do a really good job at creating a cohesive feel throughout the home, carrying the same colour scheme and vibe throughout. I’m also very particular about each and every staging piece I use, from the larger scale items to the smaller decor pieces like books, candles and vases. Each piece must fit the theme!
