Behind the lens with Christina Gregoire
How did you get started with photography?
Creative outlets have always been a big part of defining who I am. I was a shy kid, but I discovered early on that I could use different mediums to express myself. From first taking photos, I found more interest in people and the natural world. Things to discover, document - and sometimes even manipulate - to capture a story. I became a narrator with the camera and had a lot of stories to tell.
How do your roots in Trinidad and Tobago inspire your work?
My parents grew up there, and it was important that we travel back to visit as often as we could. I feel so at peace in nature, so it's no surprise that it’s the subject matter that draws me in the most. I think that there is so much untold history of Trinidad and Tobago. From the people to the places, it's all so rich with content waiting to be explored.
What excites you about collaborating with Urban Barn?
Urban Barn gave me this space to really say what I wanted to say with my art, what more could you ask for? I think everyone just wants to feel seen and heard, and Urban Barn provided an incredible opportunity to do so with a great team.
What do you hope customers feel with your artwork in their homes?
I want my photography to feel like an addition to their story. Something that they can connect to and take something from. With all my work, I want to guide the viewer but not give everything away. It's one of my favourite things about creating art; everyone can have their own interpretation. It's not up for me to decide what someone takes away from my photography. As long as they connect to it on some level, I've done my job.
Which piece from the collection is your favourite?
Blink encapsulates me best. I think that’s why it speaks to me the most. I see myself in that image, from the initial photograph to the edit. It's really a self-portrait in a lot of ways. And yes, I could go and explain why that is, but I think it's a bit more fun to leave that up to the viewer to figure out!
