In honour of Black History Month, we're interviewing some of our favourite Black Canadian designers about their inspirations, design advice and how the industry is evolving.
How do you see the Canadian design community evolving to become more diverse?
I love this question, because when I got into this industry more than fifteen years ago, very few people in this field looked like me. It is such an amazing feeling when other decorators reached out to say “thanks for paving the way. Because of your story I also left my job to follow my dreams”. A full-circle moment for me has been starting my Alluring Interiors Academy. I now have the opportunity to pour into the community of future decorators directly through sharing my own style and experiences. There is something powerful in picking up a decor magazine, turning on the TV, or scrolling through social media and seeing our community visually coming alive in this industry. It’s absolutely beautiful!
Do you have a personal design philosophy?
I communicate feelings with visuals. I adore colour and use it to evoke a visual emotion.
What inspires you?
I find inspiration in a variety of people and things. I am inspired by my clients. I get to know and understand them and their lifestyle: the clothing they wear; the food they eat, the places they go. These methods have contributed to our success and helped us decorate and stage millions of dollars in listings annually.
What's one design tip you think everyone can use in their home?
Global influence is huge for me. It gives the illusion of a well-travelled and educated home. Don’t go crazy with this; a few unique pieces will do. Achieve this through textiles, artwork and some organic elements in your accessories.
Do you have a favorite type of project take on?
I’d have to say the bedroom. This is the room that can be tailored to each family member's personality, and you can really have fun creating a space specifically for them!
How do you combine function and style in your projects?
I love this question! Here’s a simple way function meets style. There are such beautiful coffee tables out there, some with storage or pull-ups that double as a dining table. But coffee tables aren’t only functional for storage, placing your drinks and propping up your laptops. Coffee tables are perfect for styling. I love using gorgeous, oversized fashion books, flowers and an assortment of accessories.
Are there any “design rules” you love to break?
Well, I know they say never mix the old with the new, but I actually love the element of surprise when the two join forces. So, if there’s one rule I break, it’s that one!
What's one product you recommend clients splurge on?
One item I believe everyone should splurge on is a good sofa. A lot of time is spent there, so not only should it be gorgeous, but you also want it to last!
How has your work shifted in an increasingly virtual world?
Growth is the life cycle of all businesses. You want your business to grow up, become more educated, and learn how to move in the world. So we’ve had to move with the world and get digital too. We currently offer Zoom consults as well as virtual staging!
