How to style & hang curtains
Whether you call them curtains or drapes, there’s no doubt about it, these textiles can completely transform the look and feel of a room.
They can add texture and colour, darken a room or diffuse light. So, here’s what you need to know about choosing, hanging and styling them.
Choose the right opacity
Before picking your panels based on colour or fabric, think about where you’ll hang them and what purpose they’ll serve. Here’s a quick rundown of common opacities you’ll find in curtains and drapes.
Sheer
When all you need is a little privacy, sheer panels are a great option. They obscure sightlines while still letting in plenty of sunlight.
Room darkening
If you want to keep a room cool but still let some light in, opt for room darkening panels for the perfect balance of sun and shade.
Blackout
Ideal for a bedroom, blackout panels are the most effective at blocking out light and create a cool, dark environment for sleep.

Make sure you have enough panels
With a little math and a clear vision, you’ll know exactly how many panels you need. Whether you’re going for a tailored look with loose gathers or a luxe feel with tight gathers, the video below will guide you to that perfect number.
Hang them high
It’s our golden rule, and the key to making your windows, and entire room, look bigger. This means installing curtain rods 4-6 inches higher than the top of your window.
For easy opening and closing, your curtains or drapes should be about a ½ inch above the floor. Some people like to add 2-3 inches of length for a more glamorous, puddled look, but keep in mind this will affect how often they’ll need to be cleaned.
Be strategic with colours
Curtains and drapes take up a lot of surface area, so by choosing colours strategically, you can completely alter the feel of your space.
Use patterns or darker colours in bigger rooms to help create a sense of warmth and coziness. For the opposite effect, style lighter colours in smaller rooms to create the illusion of more space. If you’re a neutral lover who keeps it simple, choose panels in a shade or two darker than your walls for a cohesive, monochrome look.
Don’t be afraid to double up
Keep in mind that hanging your curtains or drapes wider than your window will not only make the space feel more expansive but will also allow more light to pour in when you pull them back. Extending the rod 6 inches beyond either side of the window is all it takes.
While it might seem like you're purchasing more panels than you need, doubling up adds a high-style touch that elevates the look, whether the drapes are open or closed. It's these thoughtful details that make all the difference in creating a truly refined space.
