Outdoor Furniture & Décor Care Guide
Everything you need to know to keep patio furniture, outdoor rugs and pillows looking beautiful season after season. With a little attention to storage and cleaning, your outdoor living room can provide years of fun in the sun.
How to Clean & Store Outdoor Furniture
We're all about making the most of patio season, and there's nothing better than having a beautiful outdoor space to spend sunny days and warm nights. Our indoor-outdoor furniture was made for fun in the sun, but it needs a little help to stay looking its best season after season. Follow our storage and cleaning guide to keep your patio furniture and outdoor fabrics in beautiful condition for backyard barbeques, al fresco cocktails, and indoor living when the weather cools
How to Store Outdoor Furniture
Properly storing patio furniture is the easiest way to avoid spending sunny days cleaning the elements off your favourite outdoor lounge chair. If you have room inside your home, or another covered area like a shed or garage, use this space to keep your outdoor furniture safely stored when it's not in use.
For condo dwellers (or anyone who doesn't feel like carrying pieces back and forth based on the forecast), furniture covers offer a convenient way to keep your outdoor furniture looking its best. Made from durable materials like canvas, vinyl or polyester, these removable covers protect furniture from rain, falling debris and UV rays that cause colour fading over time. For best results, cover your outdoor furniture whenever it's not being enjoyed. There's one exception to this rule: don't place a cover on wet or damp furniture. This traps moisture and creates an ideal environment for mildew, which equals more cleaning in your future.
Caring for Polypropylene Rope on Outdoor Furniture
Maintaining the cleanliness of the roping on your outdoor furniture is easy! Using a soft cloth and a mix of warm water and pH-neutral soap (most dishwashing liquids are safe, but always spot check first!), gently wipe down the rope, take care not to drench it completely. Avoid vigorous scrubbing or the use of abrasive brushes. After cleaning, let the roping air dry. To further prolong the life of your outdoor furniture, remember to store it under a cover whenever possible.
Taking Care of Wooden Outdoor Furniture
To maintain the natural beauty of your wooden outdoor furniture, we recommend the periodic use of a hardwood garden furniture oil. Prevent damage to the wood surface by avoiding the placement of sharp or hot objects directly on its surface. To further safeguard against ring marks and scratches, don't forget to use coasters, placemats and table runners!
How to Care for Outdoor Fabrics
Whether you're sitting on them or cuddling up against them, outdoor fabrics are the backdrop to summer fun. They're also subject to more damage than indoor fabrics, exposed to everything from harsh UV rays to dripping popsicles and backyard wildlife. Our outdoor textiles are UV stabilized and water resistant, but we recommend storing in a dry, covered area to keep these textiles looking beautiful for as long as possible.
Daily Care
Regular brushing keeps your outdoor fabrics from accumulating dust and debris outside. Anything that won't easily come off can be vacuumed with a soft brush attachment. Pay special attention to the seams, where crumbs and dirt tend to gather.
Spots & Spills
Spills happen, especially outside. Just like with indoor fabrics, it's best practice to blot first (do not rub). For oil-based spills like sunscreen, use an absorbent cloth to soak up as much liquid as possible.
To treat stains, spray on a cleaning solution made from water and a pH-neutral soap, then let sit. Rinse away soapy residue with water, and leave fabric to air dry before you continue using it.
Our outdoor pillows and seat cushions come with removable covers. While spot cleaning is recommended, they can be machine washed and hung to dry if a deeper clean is needed.
How to Care for Outdoor Rugs
Our outdoor rugs are constructed with durable, weather-friendly materials, but they're still likely to collect dust and dirt. We recommend bringing your rug inside when the weather is less than ideal.
To remove dirt and debris, you can clean your rug with a vacuum (without the rotary brush attachment) or by hanging it and hitting it with a broom to shake out dust. To remove stains or spills, don't be afraid to bring out the hose and give your rug a gentle wash with a mild, pH-neutral soap. Place your rug in a well-ventilated spot to air dry, and make sure it's completely dry before placing it back down. When it's time for a deeper cleanse, we recommend enlisting a professional rug cleaner.
