We started our business by asking people what they wanted. Then we created Urban Barn as a furniture and home décor destination where you get a little more than what you'd expect and can discover what makes a home just right.
DISCOVER AND SHARE INSPIRATION
We search the world to discover inspiration for our colours, prints, textures and ideas. But we also like to get inspiration close to home from our customers. This gives us everything we need to move into each season creating collections that excite.
Meet Sébastien Fauteux our Creative Director and the third person to join our company. What inspires him?. “I travel as much as I can just to see what people are doing. I keep a totally open mind to aesthetics - not just in décor but by what surrounds me wherever I go.”
FROM OUR HOME TO YOURS
A visit to one of our stores should evoke a sense of curiosity, discovery and delight. We love to help you feel confident and excited about the products you buy from us, and most importantly we want you to feel right at home in our home, and in yours.
Our customers are the creators of spaces that reflect their personal style and daily life. “We give you elements to work with and love to help, but instead of saying ‘do this’ we prefer to say, ‘here are the elements that could help you get to where you want to be.”’
REPEAT STEPS 1-3 ALL OVER THE COUNTRY
We've been growing new Urban Barns since 1990. Today you'll find us as far west as Nanaimo, BC to as far east as Boucherville, Quebec.
Our business started with an idea. Yours.
In 1990 our founders, Rick and Craig, opened the first Urban Barn. Soon they met Sébastien. Sébastien's vivacious character and wildly creative eye is still here with us today.
It's you, our customer that inspired us then, and leads us now. In the beginning, Urban Barn's first customers wondered why couldn't they buy inspiring, quality pieces at a decent price. So that is exactly what we set out to do. It's what we still do.
We didn't even have a name until we had a location.
Our name came from our first store. It was a beautiful space with rustic wooden floors and a barn-style door and, in spite of its busy metropolitan location, it held the feel of an old barn. So there it was, Urban Barn.
HOW WE BECAME
RIGHT AT HOME
Rick and Craig, two childhood friends from Brandon Manitoba, open our first retail store at 12th and Cambie in Vancouver. Shortly after, Sébastien joins the company and he's still with us today. The three could be seen driving around in purple vans delivering furniture.
The 90's are in the rear-view mirror and nine Urban Barn stores can be found from BC to Manitoba. Ontario followed with our first store on Queen Street West in Toronto. Drop by and say hi if you're in the neighbourhood.
Time to really grow! Enter the Stern Group, who would eventually become majority owner of Urban Barn. Co-founder Craig retires. Today we remain 100% Canadian owned.
The first year of Blanket the Country in Warmth is launched where for every $5 donation, we deliver a new fleece blanket to a local shelter. The campaign continues to reach more and more Canadians in need every year.
Retail ace Linda Letts, joins Urban Barn as its new President. Sales and expansion accelerate. Rick retires.
We open our first two stores in Quebec and launch our online store.
To further support the communities where we live and work we launched the Give & Take program in Ontario allowing home delivery customers to have their old furniture picked up and donated to Habitat for Humanity.
We are firmly planted in over 50 communities from BC to Quebec and have over 650 team members.
Before I became President at Urban Barn, I was a customer. I loved the products, but I also loved the experience and the people. And it was the unique styles and the team's passion for home décor that made taking on this role such an exciting move. Early on, I saw the spontaneity and variety of Urban Barn as crucial to its past success, and that it would also be the key to its success in the future. Since then, I've had the privilege of growing Urban Barn from an entrepreneurial west coast company to a nation-wide brand. And this couldn't have been done without the most important part of the company: our people. Their passion and drive is what drew me to Urban Barn as a customer years ago, and continue to inspire me today.
