Celebrating International Women's Day
We believe equality begins right at home. That's why Urban Barn operates on a strong foundation of women who support every part of our business.
In stores, warehouses, and our home office, this diverse group of women makes up 80% of our team and powers everything we do. Curating the products we carry, helping you choose the perfect pieces, and making sure they find their way to your home.
In a year full of challenges, we owe our successes to women of different ages, races and backgrounds, including many roles typically dominated by men. From warehouse supervisors and eCommerce coordinators to our President, Linda Letts, our brand depends on women working across six provinces. Their unique skills and strengths make us who we are today and inspire who we hope to become.
This International Women's Day, we asked our team members to share what it's like to work in a woman-led organization and what this year's "Choose to Challenge" theme means to them.
This year's IWD theme is 'Choose to Challenge'. What challenges are you taking on this year?
Growing a business in any climate can be a challenge and this pandemic has offered us a unique opportunity to stay agile and meet our customers needs in new ways. Whether through virtual design sessions, private shopping or navigating the impact of shipping delays, our store teams have stayed flexible and committed to providing outstanding service. For the year ahead, the challenge is simple, for folks to leave an Urban Barn store feeling happier than when they walked in. – Cézanne, Store Manager
What's your favourite part of your job?
"Getting to work alongside my boss, Stacey. She is a great mentor and I have learned so much from her experience in the industry." – Nicole, Purchasing Assistant
"The team leader is important, but it’s the team’s unity that makes our goals successful. My favourite part of the job is working with a great team!" Shilna, Warehouse Supervisor
What do you like about working for a company where women contribute at all levels of business?
"Beyond saying we support equality, it shows that we practice it too. I appreciate working somewhere women's voices are valued and respected, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to meet women who come from so many different places." - Anca, Graphic Designer
What message would you give to young women thinking about their careers?
"Don't be afraid to talk about your strengths. Mentorship is important, but you should be prepared to be your own number one advocate. Asking for opportunities, challenges and promotions is the first step to getting them!" - Anca, Graphic Designer
"Communicate authentically and don’t minimize yourself along the way. Most importantly, bring others along with you. We all need to be lifted up, and there is no better way than to make space for each other at the table." - Cézanne, Store Manager
