Halloween Recipe – Witch Finger Cookies

I love to bake and the recipes that are the most fun are themed. Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Beach Party… but Halloween is the best by far! There’s a few ghoulish treats I like to prepare, but one that is always popular and is very easy to make are “Witch Fingers”.

Witch Finger Cookies

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup powdered sugar (confectionery)

1 egg

1 tsp. almond extract

1 tsp. vanilla extract

2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. salt

green food colouring

3/4 cup whole blanched almonds

1 tube red decorator gel


Beat together the egg, butter, sugar and almond and vanilla extract in a bowl. Once completely blended, beat in flour, baking powder and salt. Add a few drops of green food colouring until you get the right green that you like. This step is optional, you can leave your cookies as “skin coloured” if you’d like. Once everything is blended you should have a firm dough. Form your dough into a ball and wrap in plastic wrap. Keep refrigerated for 30 minutes.

Scoop your fingers in portions of 1 tablespoon. Roll the dough into a “finger” form. Press one almond at the top to shape the end of the finger. Make an indentation roughly in the centre of the cookie, where you think the knuckle would be. Use a toothpick to add the wrinkles and knuckle lines. Place your fingers on a parchment lined baking sheet at 325 for 20-25 minutes (until cookies are pale golden). Let cool for 5 minutes. Remove the almonds and squeeze a drop of red decorator gel onto the nail bed, then press the almond back down. It looks best when the gel oozes out from underneath the nail. This recipe makes roughly 28 large witch fingers.
