Job Spotlight: Tisha, our Custom Coordinator, Western Canada

Each month, we’re sharing a little bit of what it’s like to work at Urban Barn, from our friendly faces in stores across Canada, to the awesome team in the Distribution Centres and everyone behind-the-scenes at HQ.

 

We’d like to introduce you to Tisha, our Custom Coordinator, Western Canada.

Tisha, how long have you been with Urban Barn?

3.5 years. I started in the Langley Store in September in 2013 as a part-time associate. I moved to full-time and then Shift Lead, and after approximately one year in the store I came to Head Office for the eCommerce project. Then when that project was almost completed, I moved to my role as Custom Coordinator, Western Canada.

 

What were you doing before you joined us?

I went to college for Kinesiology and Physical Education and considered teaching.  I then switched to a Criminology program which I also loved. I was a stay at home mom for 13 years.

Before that I worked at Toy “R” Us at the Metrotown location as a Department Head for the front end. After my maternity leave, it became a priority to stay at home and raise my family so I never looked back!

 

Why do you love working here?

Our people – ultimately they are what makes working here so awesome.  The staff I work with at the store level and Home Office are always so respectful and passionate.  The environment at Home Office is super-fun too, which is what I enjoy the most.

I also love that any leader or supervisor I have had at Urban Barn has always encouraged personal and professional growth, which is very important to me.  Dawne Hutchinson has always been extremely supportive and encouraged me to grow within the company.

The aspect I enjoy the most is helping people.  Being at the office and being able to help the store team members and the Customer Care team is very rewarding.  I always feel appreciated by the stores which is so satisfying because I remember clearly what it is like to be out there providing front-line customer service.

 

What’s your favourite part of the day?

I look forward to coming to work each day! Mornings are my favourite – I run before I leave for work and then commute in.  I enjoy sitting at my desk with my coffee, writing my to-do list and getting organized to tackle the day.

I also love connecting with people on the phone, which is great for my current position.

 

What do you do outside of work?

I run, play softball and spend time with my 3 kids – 2 of whom play a lot of baseball.  We are at the ball field six – seven days a week.

I would love to go back to school for life/health coaching. I actually have been thinking a lot lately about starting a blog about my personal experience being a working mom who is striving to live healthier.

 

What advice would you give others that want to grow within the company?

Express your desires. Especially to those who can help you achieve them or mentor you in any way.

 

What are some of your most valuable lessons you’ve had with UB?

There are many different personalities that make Urban Barn a great company and it is important to understand that you may not agree with or “click” with everyone.  That’s not realistic. But treating everyone you encounter with respect and kindness is always the way to go in work, and in life.

There is a something that you can learn from any conflict or challenge you have had and my biggest takeaway is to be open to learning and to change.  Personal growth and development is always a good idea.

A good example of being open to new opportunities is how I ended up in Home office for the eCommerce project.  I had been asked by Dawne Hutchinson, Where do you see yourself? I was open and honest.  I said “I would really like your position!” I would love to have days in the office and still be out in the field at times.  That wasn’t the right fit for me now (or maybe ever), but putting my desires to grow out there led to me moving into the roles I’ve held here at Home Office.

Always look for something more to do within the company or in your work environment.

 

What are you passionate about?

There are several different ingredients that make up Urban Barn, and those ingredients mix together to make something great.  I think the two most important are our product and our people.  I am also truly passionate about improving the work lives of my colleagues in any way I can which is why I like being a part of the Home Office Social Committee.  For me it is all about Work-Life balance and getting the most enjoyment out of every day – whether you are at the office or at home!
