It’s a new year and it’s the perfect time to take a fresh look at how you live in your home. Sometimes it doesn’t take much to revive your home. Here are a few fresh ways to bring your home into the New Year.
1. Ditch Your Dining Room
Consider ditching your dining room and using the space for something else. Taking your seldom used dining room furniture out of the room and adding some new comfortable furniture may be a better use of your square footage.
2. Give Your Floor Some Attention
When wallpaper isn’t an option, consider adding an interesting pattern to a different surface in your home – your floor! Rugs are a great way to change a room from blah to BOOM.
Tip: For a bigger impact, I recommend stretching your budget and buying a bigger rug.
3. Multiply the Function
Consider the many ways that one piece of furniture can be used. A long table or desk can be used as a home office, a bar area when entertaining or, when pulled away from the wall, can even be used as a small dining table in a pinch.
4. Hang Your Curtains High
Hang 96” or 108” curtains from your ceiling to your floor to create the illusion of tall windows and higher ceilings. Curtains are one of the easiest ways to update the look of a space (and perfect if you’re on a budget but need a change.) Donate your old fashioned 86” curtains and bring your home into 2014!
5. Mirror the Image
Mirrors can make a space feel twice as large and can be used to highlight the unique features of your home. Hanging a mirror at the end of a hallway will make the hallway feel twice as long. Avoid hanging a mirror where it may reflect something you’re not proud of such as a kitchen that tends to be a bit on the messy side. Instead, always hang a mirror to reflect something beautiful – a favourite painting, a window or… well, you get the idea.
