(Slightly Early) Spring Cleaning

February 29th, 2012 | Posted by Kora in Home How-To's - (2 Comments)
Stacked-High

I do realize that it’s not quite spring yet. In fact, many of you may still be shoveling snow out of your driveways but I just can’t help myself, I officially have the spring cleaning bug and I’m writing this post because I’m convinced that there are other eager beavers out there that are itching to get the party started.

Having recently moved into my small 1960’s house, storage became a very hot commodity for me, forcing me to be on a perpetual hunt for organization ideas to keep my space neat and clutter free. Here are a handful of tips that I’ve picked up along the way.

PURGE PURGE PURGE! During my move to my not-so-new place, I was forced to put some less important boxes in storage until my renovation was a bit further along. Over a year later, I have come to discover that I have completely forgotten about most of the stuff I packed up. The lesson here? If you haven’t used it or missed it in over six months, you probably don’t need it! Just remember that your trash may just be someone else’s treasure so be sure to donate your unwanted items instead of throwing them out.

PHOTOGRAPHY. Do you remember when you had to actually print photographs on paper in order to see and enjoy them? How many of you have drawers or shoe boxes bursting at the seams with old concert tickets, love notes and said photos? It’s time to take a walk down memory lane and give these items a proper home by placing them in photo albums, frames and keepsake boxes… or your fireplace if you’d rather forget that bad 80’s haircut.

STACK IT HIGH. It’s no secret that in any small space, tall vertical storage is the ideal solution for maximizing your floor space. Check out these genius invisible wall shelves that allow you to stack all your books sky high!

CLEVER STORAGE. When it comes to storage containers, I love to think outside the box – no pun intended. I have been known to use literally everything from jars, to rustic wine boxes, plastic food containers and dairy crates. There is no need to break the bank to keep things in order!

CLOSET UPDATE. If it’s your closet that needs a bit of a facelift, then it’s probably time to dispose of those mismatched hangers that you’ve held on to since childhood and collected from the drycleaners. Nice, good quality hangers not only look great but can actually help your clothes keep their shape.

CLEAN YOUR DRAWERS. No, I’m not talking about underwear. What I AM talking about are those pesky junk drawers that we’re all guilty of having. What’s the key to keeping one (or few) of these bad boys organized and clutter free?  First you must go through it and chuck out any old batteries, bills and other useless junk you may be hoarding. Once you have lightened the load, place the leftover items in a large cutlery tray or drawer organizer and resist future urges to stash additional junk in the drawer.

COORDINATING CONTAINERS. Whether it’s your pantry, entry way or linen closet, matching containers will give any shelves a streamlined look and they can be found in any style and price range.

JEWELLERY. Gaudy old jewellery boxes aren’t the only way to store your treasures these days as companies such as Umbra are continually coming up with clever ideas and solutions. Check out this awesome “Little Black Dress” which is made to offer TONS of space to stow your jewellery and allows you to hang it up and out of the way.  LOVE IT!

Bed & Dining Table

The BC Home & Garden Show was this past week. If you didn’t get a chance to check it out I can tell you that it was a great show! There was tons to see and do and Urban Barn was thrilled to be a big part of the event. You could see our products displayed in our booth or in the Karoleena “Kitsilano” Dream Home. The home was gorgeous (definitely the most visited area of all) and we were fortunate enough to be the furniture sponsor!

We featured a lot of brand new products that have or will soon be hitting stores. We also featured some of our customer favourites. Shown below is the Manhattan Sofa in a custom “Bella White” fabric. It looked very sharp with a mix of coral accent cushions.

A very popular piece from our booth was the Ella Bed in a custom “Posh Purple” (shown below). The bedroom set-up was very feminine and pretty. I lost track of how many young girls wanted this bed for their room.

The most asked about piece by far was our new Cartwright Dining Table (shown above). Made of solid pine wood, sandblasted and finished in grey, this piece is modern rustic at its best. The collection also includes a dining chair, glass cabinet and sideboard, and is arriving in our stores now!

Coming up soon is the National Home Show in Toronto (March 16-25). We will be there and hope to see you!

TC Winters Hold 40x40

As I have slowly been decorating my new place, something had felt amiss in a few rooms. It was as if the room had not been pulled together and unified in its colour palette and design. It then suddenly struck me that I needed art!

We often take it for granted, as it becomes an afterthought to just fill up wall space. However, the right piece of art can not only enhance the look of your room, but it also acts as the basis of colour and design feel in your room. In fact, I often find it fun to start the decoration of a room with art. To help create a cohesive feeling within a room, you can choose from the various colours within a piece of art to choose your larger furniture pieces and even paint colour. And don’t worry too much about matching! In fact, when the two colours  within the same colour family but different hue are used in a space, it often works best. From there, adding the little accessories within your room is very simple. Take the accent colours from within your piece of art and re-use them in your accessories, once again taking into account that the colours just need to be in the same hue. Also make sure that when you are buying a piece of art that the piece reflects the feel and design of your room.

Fiery Nightfall

If your room is warm, cozy, colourful and inviting, make sure to find a piece of art that mimics the feel of your room. Warm and bright colours such as red and orange help to accomplish this warm and cozy feel.

Or, if you have a cool and modern room, make sure to choose a painting that is very linear and structured. Cool blues and grey hues also compliment such a room.

Impactful and beautiful, the right art will create design cohesion within your room, helping to make you feel right at home. And, it just so happens we are having a promotion on all our wall art right now!

Happy Decorating!

Our photoshoots are an exciting time around here. The creative process begins with our buying team presenting the new furniture and accents we’ll see arriving in our stores in the upcoming season. The background behind these products help inspire the stories we want to tell with our pictures, and so we use these facts to develop “looks” – we begin with an item or look we’re in love with – and we build the shot from there. This one was inspired by our Elite leather sofa chaise and custom Devon chair in a cow print fabric – we called it “Cowboy Chic” – here’s a look at that shot from start to finish…We’ve got tons of new and exciting looks for Spring and can’t wait to show them to you in the upcoming weeks!

Liza Table Lamp in White

With the Grammys this past weekend, and the Oscars just around the corner, awards season is coming to a close. What better way to say goodbye then to throw a fabulous bash? Whether you’re planning a high rolling soirée or just kicking it with the ladies, no send off affair is complete without the following:

1. Mood Lighting

No party is complete without some mood lighting. Let’s be honest, lighting can be a girls’ best friend – or her worst enemy. What better way to create a pleasing ambiance than to fill the room with strategically placed candles and let the lighting set the tone of your night? If you’ve been into an Urban Barn recently, you’re sure to have noticed the arrival of the ever-popular Trina lamp’s sister, Liza. Complete with Table, Floor, and most recently the Pendant lamp,  there’s no better way to add a bit of glam to your home.

2. A Delicious Recipe

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – food can make or break any event. You want your guests feeling as if they’ve just entered a gourmet restaurant (without you having to slave over the stove all day). My go to favorite: Garlic Butter White Wine Shrimp Linguine. Sounds luxurious, but it’s a mouth-watering dish that doesn’t break the bank.

To make, simply dice 2 medium-sized shallots and cloves of garlic. Let sweat in 2 teaspoons of olive oil. In the meantime, slice about 8 large mushrooms and throw in the pot as soon as the onions start to brown. Sauté until mushrooms soften, then add in 1/3 cup of white wine, and 1 tbsp of butter (delish!). Once butter has melted, throw in shrimp (uncooked) and let turn pink. Add salt and pepper to taste, serve with linguine (or your fave pasta) et VOILA!

 3. Gorgeous Serving Ware

Now that you’ve rustled up the main attraction, you need something with pizzaz to show it off! Why not throw tradition to the wind? Instead of using your tried and true dish set, try something unconventional. Something functional.

Last but not least, to make any party a success, you need your most fabulous friends in attendance! Check out Evite for some great awards night themed invites. There are less than 2 weeks to go, so you’ll want to start sending them now!

With tips like these, you’ll be sure to let everyone know you’re a rock star hostess.

Sour Raspberry Martini

What is it about the allure of a sexy bartender? Whether you’re rocking it out classic Tom Cruise ‘Cocktails’ style or planning a ‘Coyote Ugly’ themed romp, here are a couple of recipes that anyone with basic barslinging skills (read: owns a martini shaker and can make ice) should be able to mix up to impress that special someone. I pulled together a few friends to get their feedback and opinions, and snapped some pics of the results!

Red Velvet Cupcake

Red Velvet Cupcake
A rich chocolately drink with a kick, one of my friends described it as “mmmm…pow!” I rest my case.

  •  2 oz vanilla vodka
  • 1 oz creme de cacao
  • 1 oz buttermilk (if you don’t have it, you can make it by adding a tiny splash of vinegar to your shotglass of milk)
  • 1 tbsp chocolate sauce
  • 3 drops red food colouring
  • 8 drops vanilla
  • cream cheese frosting for the rim of the cup (simply whip together a little icing sugar and cream cheese – if you don’t have any on hand, even normal sugar can serve)

Throw all the ingredients (save the cream cheese, of course) into your shaker with ice, agitate well, and serve in a martini glass.

Sorbet and Champagne

Sorbet and Champagne Cocktail

The most universally popular drink of the evening (I literally turned around to wash a cup, and when I turned back, glasses were empty), it was also the simplest to prepare. And I quote, “It’s ice cream and bubbly. How can you not like it?”

  • spoonful of fruit sorbet (this picture is of mango, however raspberry is also good!)
  • chilled champagne / prosecco

Depending on how sweet and juice-like you want it, put anywhere from a teaspoon to a tablespoon of sorbet in your champagne flute, then fill it up to the top with your bubbly – I found that the drink needed a little mixing with a fork / spoon to get the sorbet fully incorporated.

Between The Sheets

Between the Sheets

A sultry name for a drink that means business - it seems to have come by its name because, as one of my friends put it, “it’ll get you there!” It has a nice mix and balance though, and if you wanted to soften it up, my recommendation would be a dash of orange juice.

  • 1 oz white rum
  • 1 oz Cointreau / Grand Marnier (fyi – G.M. is apparently sweeter than Cointreau, take your pick. However, if this is not something you keep in your cabinet, they have the bitty baby bottles of Grand Marnier at the liquor store that will make just about 2 servings)
  • 1/2 oz lemon juice
  • 1 oz cognac

Everything in shaker with ice, shake and pour.

Sour Raspberry Martini

Sour Raspberry Martini

In a break from all the syrupy sweetness of Valentine’s, a sour drink out there for the defiantly single! Voted prettiest drink of the night, it smells amazing too…

  • 1 oz vodka
  • 1 oz sour raspberry schnapps
  • 1 oz pomegranate juice
  • raspberries for garnish

All the liquids in the shaker, add ice, shake, pour. Throw berries on top, and you’re done! If you’re feeling creative, this is a super basic recipe that can be modified very easily (ie. swap in apple schnapps and apple juice, et voila, you’ve got a sour apple martini).

I’ve never been one to take Valentine’s Day too seriously, but it’s nice to do something special for your partner every once in a while. There are the traditional gifts: jewellery, flowers and chocolates… why not try surprising them with something different? February 14th could be the perfect time to cuddle up on the Nest Chair. This chair is big and comfy – fit for two! Get it sooner by ordering the Furniture Faster model (shown below in Bella Grey) or customize it to match the taste of that special someone.
